Stéphane Grappelli aurait eu cent ans cette année…
Et du coup, les hommages au violoniste ont tendance à se se multiplier ces derniers temps, ce n’est pas ici qu’on va pas s’en plaindre.
On se souvient qu’en 2000, Didier Lockwood nous avait déjà proposé un magnifique Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli, enregistré dans l’intimité d’un trio de luxe et de très haute tenue avec Biréli Lagrène et NHOP. Cette année, l’hommage ne sera pas à Stéphane, mais pour Stéphane. Entendez par là qu’on ne va pas ici chercher à imiter le jeu et la technique de Grappelli, mais plutôt tenter de retrouver son esprit, sa personnalité, sa légèreté et son élégance, son humour et sa poésie, bref, tout ce qui incarnait un peu l’âme du génial violoniste. Et en convoquant pour ce disque autant de musiciens (27 au total… !), aussi brillants (Solal, Urtreger, Azzola, Lagrène, Luc pour ne citer qu’eux…), et toutes générations confondues (de l’étonnante Fiona Monbet-en extrait- à Toots Thielmans…), Didier Lockwood a mis dans le mille : car chacun arrive en effet avec ses souvenirs et son admiration, avec surtout sa propre expérience grapellienne, qu’elle aie été vécue (pour ceux qui ont eu le bonheur de l’accompagner) ou inspirée pour les plus jeunes, chaque morceau devenant alors un petit univers dédié au violoniste. Bien sûr, et c’était le risque avec une telle entreprise, on peinera peut être à trouver une unité de style dans cet album taux formules très disparates. Mais est-ce bien important ? Car si l’on tient absolument à suivre un fil, il suffira peut être de simplement se laisser guider par l’archet de Didier Lockwood et par cette touchante affection qu’il porte, comme tous les musiciens, au regretté violoniste.
Ne manquez pas en bonus les témoignages vidéos, ils réservent quelques surprises : un chorus d’alto par un Biréli Lagrène qui n’en mène pas large (quel hommage !), Sylvain Luc qui joue mal de la guitare (si si, c’est possible !), ou encore, le touchant témoignage de Toots Thielmans sur les origines “grappellienne” de Bluesette…

Sorti en 1981 chez RCA, ce disque de Schnuckenack Reinhardt est tout à fait dans la lignée des précédents. Du swing et des csardas !
Comme d’habitude avec les disques du violoniste, pas facile de s’y retrouver dans les titres, qui correspondent de façon très “personnelle” aux musiques entendues. Problèmes de droits, insouciance, erreur de la production… ? Ou plus simplement, des pochettes victimes de la tradition orale des sinte qui apprennent les morceaux de père en fils. Par exemple, Jak-swing est connu par chez nous sous le nom de Cesar swing. Mais il est parfois joué aussi sous le nom de Recado swing… et si on traduit le romanes, cela devient le Swing du feu ! Pas facile de s’en sortir ! Et pas bien grave tant que la musique est bonne…
Quant aux musiciens qui accompagnent Schnuckenack, on notera la présence à la guitare solo de Forello Reinhardt, un des fils du violoniste qui rejoint ici son frère Ricardo tenant lui même la rythmique. Cet excellent guitariste rejoindra plus tard le Hot Club the Zigan de Schmitto Kling, qui a lui même repris le quintet du regretté violoniste décédé en avril 2006.

Schnuckenack Reinhardt is a historical and inevitable swing manouche. Gypsy Swing should say. For it is undoubtedly he who has the most popular, with the help of Siegfried MÄEKER and the series of famous Musik deutscher Zigeuner, inspired this amazing style of Django and the musette waltz, of course, but also traditional gypsy melodies and Hungarian. Schnuckenack, which means “Pretty Nose” in Romance, was born on 17 February 1921 to Weinsheim Germany. His father, a cousin of the mother of Django, was also a violinist. At the age of three, the small Schnuckenack who had no other toys that the violin was able to give perfectly. Gypsy family leads a life as itinerant.
In 30 years, the clan moved to Mainz. Schnuckenack joined the Music Conservatory of the city where he received classical training.
The war and the flight ...
1938: The situation changed with the onset of the persecution of gypsies by the Nazis. The family is trapped Reinhardt few days before being deported to Poland. Miraculously they managed to escape in Czestochowa in pretending to be a folk group of Hungarian gypsies. They play in the cafe until 1943 “Europa” for German soldiers. Death and sinking ...
Some time later, the SS are also conducting a raid against the village. They surround and capture a dozen young gypsy whose Schnuckenack. He managed nevertheless to escape into the crowd. The Nazis draw but missed. He took refuge in a barber shop where he will see the execution of his companions in misfortune.
Another time he walked around Krakow with a gypsy friend, a car stopped at their level. Two SS came out asking them to submit their papers. Of course, they did not. The youngest brother Schnuckenack but not so lucky. He had a girlfriend whom he was so loving that he forgot to be careful: he tried to sleep in a German hotel. The maid immediately called the Gestapo. He was arrested and deported to Auschwitz where he was assassinated.
The release
In 1944, Russians return to Poland and the Germans hunt. Reinhardt joined the train of fugitives (!) And returned to Germany. They settled in Kulmbach in Bavaria.
After the war, they are presented to the head of the Seventh Army, General Clay. Therefore Schnuckenack play for American soldiers. There he learns the jazz standards.
Die Musik deutscher Zigeuner
In 1966, during a pilgrimage to Lourdes, Schnuckenack meets a young man who will change his life: Sigfried MÄEKER. This will convince the producer to make the violinist Musik der Zigeuner accessible to a wide audience. Schnuckenack therefore brings together musicians, a quintet form and gives a first concert in November 1967 in Heidelberg. The world discovered this amazing music of Hungarian music, musette waltz, jazz swing and gypsy folk.
It records in November 1968 the first volume of Musik deutscher Zigeuner Song at Da Camera. The first consists of Quintett Schnuckenack on violin, and Bobby Reinhardt Daweli Falta solo guitar, Spatzo Weiss to the rhythmic and Hojok Merstein on bass. A second disc will follow.
In 1970, Bobby Falta Daweli Reinhardt and are replaced by the Winterstein Holzmanno pump and especially the young virtuoso Häns’che Weiss disembarking East Germany. The Quintett runs beautifully, several fantastic albums are published including a memorable live with singer Goulesco Lida.

Many albums are made with different formations, Forello Reinhardt, another son of Schnuckenack taking the place of Bobby Falta chorus to guitar.
Since the late 60s, Schnuckenack Reinhardt recorded a twenty albums.
He died on 16 April 2006 in its 85th year, shortly after celebrating his farewell to the theater scene Bensheim (Germany), and had failed on this occasion its leadership to his step-brother, the violinist Schmitto Kling (of the Hot Club Zigani).
