February 3rd, 1979: the Jazzland is sold out. ItпїЅs a Saturday evening and itпїЅs the final night for Marc FossetпїЅs Trio. The band had already played several times in Neuchâtel, for the great pleasure of the audiences who are enticed by the warm complicity that unites the renowned Parisian left-handed guitar virtuoso, the Swiss-adopted Hammond player Jean-Luc Parodi, and the local drummer Denis Progin, owner of the Jazzland club. The repertoire mainly consists of standards that are familiar to the audience, who nonetheless are anxious to hear the arranged versions the Trio will produce of tunes such as Body and Sould, Oleo, On Green Dolphin Street, or even the bossanovas by Jobim like Corcovado and Desafinado.
The electric guitar, with its strong and mellow sound, elegantly and respectfully phrased in the Bebop tradition, often accompanied by MarcпїЅs voice, connects admirably to Jean-LucпїЅs Hammond who fills beautifully the bass lines with his left hand on the keyboard. The rhythm is provided by DenisпїЅ energy and relentless tempo; he masters the ternary on the cymbals and rolls elegantly on the bass and snare drums.
The recording was made with a Stellavox tape recorder placed on the edge of a table, to which three dynamic range mics were connected. These somewhat precarious conditions were quite common for an ethnomusicologist like me who was exploring and researching music in its typical exotic environment. The authentic sound of the Jazzland is thus brought to todayпїЅs listener unscathed. One can hear the audience with its exclamations, and the comments of the band members, in a typical jazz club setting.
This CD is therefore a historical document that testifies the lively jazz scene of Neuchâtel at the end of the пїЅ70s, and it also pays homage to the late Denis Progin and Jean-Luc Parodi who passed away in 1997 and 1999, respectively.

la guitare électrique, au son puissant et пїЅ rond пїЅ, au phrasé élégant de tradition bebop, souvent accompagné de la voix de Marc, se marie admirablement à lпїЅorgue Hammond de Jean-Luc, qui assure aussi lпїЅaccompagnement de basse à la main gauche, dans un jeu tout en nuances, parfois planant, parfois déchaîné ou canaille. Le soutien rythmique est garanti par un Denis énergique, au tempo implacable, maîtrisant parfaitement le ternaire à la cymbale, les roulements et les breaks sur sa caisse claire et sa grosse caisse.
LпїЅenregistrement a été réalisé à lпїЅaide dпїЅun magnétophone autonome Stellavox posé sur un coin de table et de trois micros dynamiques, dans les conditions précaires auxquelles est habituellement confronté un ethnomusicologue lorsquпїЅil mène une enquête sur la musique de son terrain exotique. LпїЅambiance authentique du Jazzland est ainsi restituée sans artifices (sinon à la fin de la dernière plage), avec les interventions du public, les exclamations et commentaires des musiciens, sur un fond sonore typique de boîte de jazz.
Il sпїЅagit donc à la fois dпїЅun document historique témoignant de la vie jazzistique féconde à Neuchâtel à la fin des années 70 et dпїЅun hommage à Denis Progin et Jean-Luc Parodi, décédés respectivement en 1997 et 1999.

Am 3. Februar 1979 Jazzland hängt die Tafel пїЅausgebuchtпїЅ aus: es ist Samstagabend und die letzte Soiree vom Marc Fosset Trio. Die Musiker sind mehrmals in Neuenburg aufgetreten und beim örtlichen Publikum gutgeheisst worden, insbesondere durch die herzliche Mittäterschaft zwischen dem berühmten linkshändigen Pariser Gitarrist, dem Adoptivschweizer Organist Jean-Luc Parodi und dem neuenburgerischen Schlagzeuger Denis Progin, Besitzer vom Jazzland. Das Abend Repertoire entsteht aus berühmten Jazz Standards, geläufig zu den meistens Jazz Liebhabern die an diesem Abend ihre Erfahrungen mit denen vom Trio vorgeschlagen wie пїЅBody and SoulпїЅ, пїЅOleoпїЅ, пїЅOn green Dolphin StreetпїЅ oder Jobim Bossanovas wie пїЅCorcovadoпїЅ und пїЅDesafinadoпїЅ vergleichen möchten.
Die elektrische Guitar, mit einem kraftvollen und gleichzeitig harmonischen Klang, in einer eleganten traditionellen Bebopstruktur gekleidet, häufig von Marc Stimme begleitet, paart sich ausgezeichnet mit der Hammond Orgel von Jean-Luc, der mit der linken Hand die Bass Begleitung sichert, sehr empfindlich, manchmal flach manchmal wild. Die rhythmische Begleitung wird energisch vom Denis gesichert, meisterhaft spielend zwischen Zymbals, Breaks und grosse Trommel.
Die Aufnahme erfolgte mit einem Magnetophonband Stellavox, einfach auf einem Tisch positioniert, mit drei dynamischen Mikrophonen, in sehr prekären und unstabilen Konditionen, welche normalerweise die Ethnomusikologen bei der Untersuchung einer Musik auf einem exotischem Feld konfrontiert werden. Somit wird die echte Räumlichkeit des Jazzland wiedergegeben, пїЅliveпїЅ ohne Retuschen, mit dem Publikum Untergrund Flüstern und die Kommentare und Ausrufe der Musiker, in einem typischen Jazzkeller-Sound.
Es handelt sich hier um ein historisches Dokument, das die Jazz Geschichte vom Neuenburg gegen Ende der siebziger Jahren darstellt und gleichzeitig ein Hommage an Denis Progin und Jean-Luc Parodi, gestorben bzw. im Jahr 1997 und 1999, verkörpert.

Cela faisait quelques temps que l’on n’avait pas eu de nouvelles de Berne et du Hot Strings de Féré Scheidegger… Il faut dire que même si la Suisse est à deux pas de chez nous, les disques du quartet helvète restent assez difficiles à se procurer en France ; on est ainsi passé à côté du Love Songs de 2008 qu’on aurait pourtant bien aimé écouté... Qu’à cela ne tienne, Féré nous revient aujourd’hui en pleine forme avec un CD bien rempli : 18 titres soit près de 73 minutes de musique, on ne va pas s’en plaindre.
La formation initiale est composée de Féré aux guitares manouches et électriques et à l’harmonica, et de l’excellent Thomas Dürst à la contrebasse ; tous deux sont présents depuis la création d’Hot Strings en 1990. Se rapportent au quartet d’aujourd’hui Rainer Hagmann au violon et Dani Solimine à la guitare. Plus sur ce disque une multitude d’invités selon les titres : on remarquera particulièrement la présence de Martin Abbuehl (Swing Express) au violon, Peter Horisberger au vibraphone et Felix Haller à l’accordéon.
Le répertoire, très varié, laisse surtout place à des compositions de Féré : du swing bien râpeux (Hot Club dance, Swinging strings, Magic madness), des bossas (Happiness is a journey, Quiet moments, Brise estivale, Jardin d mes rêves), du blues (Blues for Radio Swiss Jazz, Lorraine blues, Bluesy swing) et des balades (La lune, Lovely feelings). Quelques reprises viennent surprendre l’auditeur : Fragile de Sting chantée par Jasmin Scheidegger, une très belle adaption du Little wing d’Hendrix avec bottle neck à la clef et un génial solo de violon rappelant la “Fender” de Jimi , un Black magic woman plus santanesque que jamais… Le tout est toujours très bien joué, sans esbroufe, avec complicité et en laissant beaucoup de place au violon (les échanges de cordes à deux violons sur Magic madness sont particulièrement savoureux). Tout en conservant son jeu admirable de musicalité et de simplicité, Féré passe sans difficulté de la Selmer à l’archtop : son feeling se fait seulement plus bop ou plus rabouin selon l’inspiration du morceau. On pourra d’ailleurs se faire une idée de l’étendue de ses talents dans son Solo guitar medley plein de délicatesse et de naturel citant au hasard de son imagination, et toujours avec élégance Petite fleur, The shadow of your smile ou Moon river…
Un cd qu’on mettra évidemment entre toutes les mains, en attendant peut être un concert un de ces jours à Paris ?

Wonderful news, boys and girls. Today, a nice guy came around with the first batch of our debut album “Riding the Rails”. We’re looking at it as we speak and we’re delighted! It took us two days to record and approximately 30 hours to mix it … and it sounds just the way we hoped it would sound. Most of the songs are Little Kim originals, performed according to our old family recipe :) a nice mixture of western swing, hot club and old fashioned hot jazz and cool swing.

The album was recorded on 9th and 23rd November 2009 at the “Closed Session Studio” in Roeselare (www.closedsession.ssr.be). Trumpets and violins were recorded on 22nd December at “Studio Flip Flap” in Gent.

Thingamajig is a song out of our debut album: “Riding the Rails” (Little Kim & the Alley Apple 3).

It’s a funny little novelty song recorded by Johnnie Lee Wills and His Boys - Johnnie Lee being the brother of the legendary Bob Wills.

“Thingamajig” was written by well known songwriter Cindy Walker. “You Don’t Know Me” and “Dream Baby” are perhaps her two best known songs. The Johnny Lee version of the song was recorded on Feb. 3, 1952, at the KVOO studios, for RCA. Lead vocals by Julian “Curley” Lewis. Johnnie Lee Wills is asking the questions and singing on the trio part. Don Tolle on electric guitar, Tommy Elliott on steel guitar, Clarence Cagle on piano, Chuck Adams on bass, Waid Peeler on drums, Curley Lewis, Henry Boatman and James Guy “Cotton” Thompson on fiddle.

C’est une chanson drôle de petite nouveauté enregistrées par Johnnie Lee Wills et ses garçons - Johnnie Lee était le frère du légendaire Bob Wills.

“machin” a été écrit par auteur-compositeur bien connu Cindy Walker. “You Don’t Know Me"et “Dream Baby” sont peut-être son meilleur deux chansons connues. Smoky Parisian bistros and steamy eight-to-the-bar rhythms, with an occasional two-step toward Texas roadhouse swing, continue to inspire AustinпїЅs archival threesome on Ghost Train. The band covers a few old tunes, but the best performances crop up on their own songs and particularly the ones fashioned with Art Deco affectation. These dominate the first part of the album, most persuasively on пїЅSleep,пїЅ deftly written and performed in fairly authentic gypsy style, and пїЅHome,пїЅ which features a disarming, unaffected vocal by Elana Fremerman over a sly and slippery melody line. Hot Club of CowtownпїЅs relatively routine performance of пїЅYou Took Advantage of MeпїЅ leads to wilder Western territory; here, aside from FremermanпїЅs searing fiddle throughout пїЅCherokee Shuffle,пїЅ their reversion to rawboned cowboy rusticity leaves an anti-climactic aftertaste. Western swing revivalists Hot Club of Cowtown formed in San Diego, CA in 1996; originally a duo pairing singer/violinist Elana Fremerman and singer/guitarist Whit Smith, a subsequent move to Austin, TX made room for the addition of bassist Billy Horton. Signing to Hightone, the trio issued its debut album, SwinginпїЅ Stampede!, in the fall of 1998; the follow-up, Tall Tales, appeared a year later. New bassist Matt Weiner joined Smith and Fremerman for 2000пїЅs DevпїЅlish Mary. Ghost Train came two years later in 2002, and it showed the group focusing more on original material and cutting back on the amount of covers. Continental Stomp followed in 2003, with Wishful Thinking arriving in 2009, and in 2011, the Hot Club finally surrendered to the obvious and released a tribute to Bob Wills, What Makes Bob Holler (the album was actually released in November of 2010 in the U.K.).
