A wonderful collection of some very cool jazz recordings – all of them made for French films of the New Wave era, and rarely, if ever, reissued! The package is the 4th in this excellent Jazz & Cinema series within the larger Jazz In Paris line – and it’s actually the rarest of the bunch, with work that we’d never heard before on CD. Most tunes were originally issued only as singles or short 7” eps – a common format for French soundtracks, and the reason that many of them were rarely issued as albums – and although the sources are different, there’s a really unified feel to the material. Titles include “Touchez Pas Au Grisbi” and “Grisbi Blues” by Jean Wetzel, from the film Touchez Pas Au Grisbi; “No Hay Dinero Caballo”, “Va Ya Pa’Ti”, and “L’Espionnage” by Gonzalo Fernandez & Martial Solal, from the film Les Ennemis; “Sentimental Slow” by Martial Solal from the film Le Proces; “Cora”, “Patricia”, and “Amanda” by Alain Gourager from the film Le Piege; and “Generique”, “Le Ciel C’Est Toi”, and “Cha Cha De Cullera” by Michel De Villers from the film Le Saint Mene La Danse.

French guitarist Henri Crolla is heard with a variety of different groups in this compilation of recordings from the 1950s. Although the first ten tracks were recorded as a tribute to the late Django Reinhardt, Crolla stays in the background to allow violinist Stéphane Grappelli to dominate the brief rendition of “Swing 39.” In “Minor Swing,” Grappelli clarinetist Hubert Rostaing and alto saxophonist Andre Ekyan solo prior to the leader, with Crolla capturing some of the flavor of Reinhardt without copying him outright. But the ballad features without Grappelli are the most surprising tracks. Reinhardt’s lovely but obscure “Anouman” showcases Ekyan with the rhythm section, minus Crolla, who evidently sat out this number. Crolla does justice to “Nuages” with a lively solo, complemented by Rostaing’s clarinet. The final four selections come from an EP, with Crolla leading a sextet including Rostaing, trumpeter Roger Guerin, and pianist Martial Solal. The guitarist has a far more prominent role throughout this date and seems inspired by the material, which consists of standards of the swing era. This volume in Universal Music’s extensive Jazz in Paris CD reissue series is definitely worth picking up. ~ Ken Dryden

I Raisa est le second album de Titi Winterstein, sorti en 1980, trois ans après la dissolution du quintet d’Häns’che Weiss. Le personnel a toutefois un peu évolué ; Hojok Merstein, malade, est remplacé par un tout jeune contrebassiste, Thomas Fichter. La soeur d’Hojok, Bimbam Merstein viendra chanter un joli titre, I Raisa (Le Voyage). On pourra également entendre Enzo Biordi à l’accordéon notamment sur les valses (Indifférence, Mystérieuse). Il laissera sa place plus tard à l’excellent Klaus Bruder.
Le noyau dur du quintet est par contre toujours fidèle au poste : Ziroli et Holzmanno Winterstein aux guitares rhytmiques, Silvano Lagrène au piano et surtout Lulu Reinhardt aux solos de guitare. On ne dira sans doute jamais assez combien son jeu subtil, enlevé et parfois agressif, mais ne cédant en rien aux facilités de la virtuosité gratuite, le place parmi les meilleurs guitaristes du genre. Il y a toujours beaucoup de discernement dans sa façon d’envoyer les traits. Et il envoyer, il sait le faire le Lulu !
Sans doute pas le meilleur album du fameux quintet (à géométrie variable…), mais un très bon disque, alternant agréablement les standards, les valses et les morceaux traditionnels où Titi se délecte toujours autant… Par contre on posera une réserve sur la rythmique parfois inutilement alourdie par le piano. Un piano qui tient ici souvent le rôle du cymballum (sans sa légèreté...) surtout sur les morceaux tziganes. Trois guitares + un piano + un accordéon = (parfois) grosse polyphonie… pour rester poli.

Sorti en 1981 chez RCA, ce disque de Schnuckenack Reinhardt est tout à fait dans la lignée des précédents. Du swing et des csardas !
Comme d’habitude avec les disques du violoniste, pas facile de s’y retrouver dans les titres, qui correspondent de façon très “personnelle” aux musiques entendues. Problèmes de droits, insouciance, erreur de la production… ? Ou plus simplement, des pochettes victimes de la tradition orale des sinte qui apprennent les morceaux de père en fils. Par exemple, Jak-swing est connu par chez nous sous le nom de Cesar swing. Mais il est parfois joué aussi sous le nom de Recado swing… et si on traduit le romanes, cela devient le Swing du feu ! Pas facile de s’en sortir ! Et pas bien grave tant que la musique est bonne…
Quant aux musiciens qui accompagnent Schnuckenack, on notera la présence à la guitare solo de Forello Reinhardt, un des fils du violoniste qui rejoint ici son frère Ricardo tenant lui même la rythmique. Cet excellent guitariste rejoindra plus tard le Hot Club the Zigan de Schmitto Kling, qui a lui même repris le quintet du regretté violoniste décédé en avril 2006.
