February 3rd, 1979: the Jazzland is sold out. ItпїЅs a Saturday evening and itпїЅs the final night for Marc FossetпїЅs Trio. The band had already played several times in Neuchâtel, for the great pleasure of the audiences who are enticed by the warm complicity that unites the renowned Parisian left-handed guitar virtuoso, the Swiss-adopted Hammond player Jean-Luc Parodi, and the local drummer Denis Progin, owner of the Jazzland club. The repertoire mainly consists of standards that are familiar to the audience, who nonetheless are anxious to hear the arranged versions the Trio will produce of tunes such as Body and Sould, Oleo, On Green Dolphin Street, or even the bossanovas by Jobim like Corcovado and Desafinado.
The electric guitar, with its strong and mellow sound, elegantly and respectfully phrased in the Bebop tradition, often accompanied by MarcпїЅs voice, connects admirably to Jean-LucпїЅs Hammond who fills beautifully the bass lines with his left hand on the keyboard. The rhythm is provided by DenisпїЅ energy and relentless tempo; he masters the ternary on the cymbals and rolls elegantly on the bass and snare drums.
The recording was made with a Stellavox tape recorder placed on the edge of a table, to which three dynamic range mics were connected. These somewhat precarious conditions were quite common for an ethnomusicologist like me who was exploring and researching music in its typical exotic environment. The authentic sound of the Jazzland is thus brought to todayпїЅs listener unscathed. One can hear the audience with its exclamations, and the comments of the band members, in a typical jazz club setting.
This CD is therefore a historical document that testifies the lively jazz scene of Neuchâtel at the end of the пїЅ70s, and it also pays homage to the late Denis Progin and Jean-Luc Parodi who passed away in 1997 and 1999, respectively.

la guitare électrique, au son puissant et пїЅ rond пїЅ, au phrasé élégant de tradition bebop, souvent accompagné de la voix de Marc, se marie admirablement à lпїЅorgue Hammond de Jean-Luc, qui assure aussi lпїЅaccompagnement de basse à la main gauche, dans un jeu tout en nuances, parfois planant, parfois déchaîné ou canaille. Le soutien rythmique est garanti par un Denis énergique, au tempo implacable, maîtrisant parfaitement le ternaire à la cymbale, les roulements et les breaks sur sa caisse claire et sa grosse caisse.
LпїЅenregistrement a été réalisé à lпїЅaide dпїЅun magnétophone autonome Stellavox posé sur un coin de table et de trois micros dynamiques, dans les conditions précaires auxquelles est habituellement confronté un ethnomusicologue lorsquпїЅil mène une enquête sur la musique de son terrain exotique. LпїЅambiance authentique du Jazzland est ainsi restituée sans artifices (sinon à la fin de la dernière plage), avec les interventions du public, les exclamations et commentaires des musiciens, sur un fond sonore typique de boîte de jazz.

Am 3. Februar 1979 Jazzland hängt die Tafel пїЅausgebuchtпїЅ aus: es ist Samstagabend und die letzte Soiree vom Marc Fosset Trio. Die Musiker sind mehrmals in Neuenburg aufgetreten und beim örtlichen Publikum gutgeheisst worden, insbesondere durch die herzliche Mittäterschaft zwischen dem berühmten linkshändigen Pariser Gitarrist, dem Adoptivschweizer Organist Jean-Luc Parodi und dem neuenburgerischen Schlagzeuger Denis Progin, Besitzer vom Jazzland. Das Abend Repertoire entsteht aus berühmten Jazz Standards, geläufig zu den meistens Jazz Liebhabern die an diesem Abend ihre Erfahrungen mit denen vom Trio vorgeschlagen wie пїЅBody and SoulпїЅ, пїЅOleoпїЅ, пїЅOn green Dolphin StreetпїЅ oder Jobim Bossanovas wie пїЅCorcovadoпїЅ und пїЅDesafinadoпїЅ vergleichen möchten.
Die elektrische Guitar, mit einem kraftvollen und gleichzeitig harmonischen Klang, in einer eleganten traditionellen Bebopstruktur gekleidet, häufig von Marc Stimme begleitet, paart sich ausgezeichnet mit der Hammond Orgel von Jean-Luc, der mit der linken Hand die Bass Begleitung sichert, sehr empfindlich, manchmal flach manchmal wild. Die rhythmische Begleitung wird energisch vom Denis gesichert, meisterhaft spielend zwischen Zymbals, Breaks und grosse Trommel.
Die Aufnahme erfolgte mit einem Magnetophonband Stellavox, einfach auf einem Tisch positioniert, mit drei dynamischen Mikrophonen, in sehr prekären und unstabilen Konditionen, welche normalerweise die Ethnomusikologen bei der Untersuchung einer Musik auf einem exotischem Feld konfrontiert werden. Somit wird die echte Räumlichkeit des Jazzland wiedergegeben, пїЅliveпїЅ ohne Retuschen, mit dem Publikum Untergrund Flüstern und die Kommentare und Ausrufe der Musiker, in einem typischen Jazzkeller-Sound.
Es handelt sich hier um ein historisches Dokument, das die Jazz Geschichte vom Neuenburg gegen Ende der siebziger Jahren darstellt und gleichzeitig ein Hommage an Denis Progin und Jean-Luc Parodi, gestorben bzw. im Jahr 1997 und 1999, verkörpert.

Trois ans après l’excellent Swing for bop, voilà Mistral, le nouvel album du guitariste hollandais Reinier Voet et de sa formation Pigalle44.
Déjà, l’objet est élégant : un joli digipack, avec surtout à l’intérieur, un livret très complet comportant de nombreuses photos d’archives et une explication de Reinier pour chaque titre entendu sur l’album. Un tel luxe et une telle attention sont plutôt rares pour une autoprod’. D’autant qu’en prime, cerise sur le gâteau, un lumineux commentaire d’ Alain Antonietto himself vient éclairer l’auditeur quant au projet du disque…
Il faut dire que ce disque, c’est un petit régal pour les djangophiles : Reinier Voet semble avoir pris un malin plaisir à dénicher quelques raretés au sein de sa collection de vinyls pour les tourner et les retourner à sa propre façon. Répertoire français, donc, où l’on convoquera quelques belles pointures : Crolla, Baro Ferret et Jo Privat, Jean-Pierre Sasson, Joseph Reinhardt et Jacques Verrières, et bien sûr le génial manouche Django Reinhardt, toujours dans des compositions inhabituelles. Clou du spectacle, un morceau inédit de Sarane Ferret intitulé Soir triste, jamais enregistré et dont la partition fut envoyée à Reiner par Antonietto. Et trois jolies compositions du leader viennent aussi parfaire ce programme particulièrement alléchant.
Alléchant à plus d’un titre : le répertoire, on la vu (géniale idée que d’avoir ressorti cette petite merveille de Sidonie, chantée initialement par Bardot et reprise ici en bossa…). Et aussi le jeu de Reinier, qui dépasse largement le style dit “manouche”. Certes, notre ami guitariste joue sur une vieille Favino du père, parfois équipée d’un très agréable de Armond de 53, et on peut retrouver ça et là quelques jolies figures du style gitan. Mais avant tout, Reinier Voet est un superbe improvisateur, développant son propre discours qui rappelle autant Django que le bebop, la valse musette que la musique brésilienne ou la chanson… Bref un éclectisme assumé et rafraichissant, pour une musique originale, toujours passionnante à écouter…
Une très belle réussite.

Reinier Voet studied guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Den Haag. His teacher was the renowned Dutch jazz guitarist Peter Nieuwerf. Reinier has been playing in several jazz bands for the last 15 years, amongst others as the accompanyist of the young gipsy guitarist Jimmy Rosenberg and he has been playing in the quintet of the ultimate master of Django guitar, Fapy Lafertin, for four years. Reinier is a regular performer at several Django Reinhardt festivals, including: Wilhelmshaven (Germany), Oslo, Paris, and Brussels.

Stéphane Grappelli aurait eu cent ans cette année…
Et du coup, les hommages au violoniste ont tendance à se se multiplier ces derniers temps, ce n’est pas ici qu’on va pas s’en plaindre.
On se souvient qu’en 2000, Didier Lockwood nous avait déjà proposé un magnifique Tribute to Stéphane Grappelli, enregistré dans l’intimité d’un trio de luxe et de très haute tenue avec Biréli Lagrène et NHOP. Cette année, l’hommage ne sera pas à Stéphane, mais pour Stéphane. Entendez par là qu’on ne va pas ici chercher à imiter le jeu et la technique de Grappelli, mais plutôt tenter de retrouver son esprit, sa personnalité, sa légèreté et son élégance, son humour et sa poésie, bref, tout ce qui incarnait un peu l’âme du génial violoniste. Et en convoquant pour ce disque autant de musiciens (27 au total… !), aussi brillants (Solal, Urtreger, Azzola, Lagrène, Luc pour ne citer qu’eux…), et toutes générations confondues (de l’étonnante Fiona Monbet-en extrait- à Toots Thielmans…), Didier Lockwood a mis dans le mille : car chacun arrive en effet avec ses souvenirs et son admiration, avec surtout sa propre expérience grapellienne, qu’elle aie été vécue (pour ceux qui ont eu le bonheur de l’accompagner) ou inspirée pour les plus jeunes, chaque morceau devenant alors un petit univers dédié au violoniste. Bien sûr, et c’était le risque avec une telle entreprise, on peinera peut être à trouver une unité de style dans cet album taux formules très disparates. Mais est-ce bien important ? Car si l’on tient absolument à suivre un fil, il suffira peut être de simplement se laisser guider par l’archet de Didier Lockwood et par cette touchante affection qu’il porte, comme tous les musiciens, au regretté violoniste.
Ne manquez pas en bonus les témoignages vidéos, ils réservent quelques surprises : un chorus d’alto par un Biréli Lagrène qui n’en mène pas large (quel hommage !), Sylvain Luc qui joue mal de la guitare (si si, c’est possible !), ou encore, le touchant témoignage de Toots Thielmans sur les origines “grappellienne” de Bluesette…

Enregistré en live à Birdland, (NY) en 2002, à l’exception du morceau bonus de Babik Reinhardt en 2000. Le festival Django Reinhardt a été créé en 2000 et c’est, depuis lors, un évènement annuel, démontrant combien le style musical de Django fut (et est) spécial aussi bien que le brillant talent des artistes qui s’y vouent. Le génie artistique et la virtuosité de ces musiciens les rangent parmi les meilleurs du monde.L’apport aux grands du jazz américain de musiciens européens donne une nouvelle et excitante dimension. L’année où ce CD fut enregistré est l’une des meilleures par la participation de musiciens exceptionnels. Cet enregistrement redonne la magie et l’électricité de cette combinaison.

The Django Reinhardt Festival has been a terrific series at Birdland for fans of gypsy swing as heard in this compilation of live sets. Two strong performers, either Angelo Debarre or Dorado Schmitt, play lead guitar, backed by a potent, alternating cast of supporting musicians including clarinetist Ken Peplowski, bassists Jay Leonhart or Jon Burr (the latter an alum of Stéphane Grappelli’s band), Grady Tate (on brushes) and accordion player Ludovic Beier , among others. The performances keep the music fresh rather than simply rendering them as museum-piece re-creations. They explore standards from the 1930s and both Django Reinhardt’s timeless compositions and lesser-known works with equal enthusiasm to appreciative crowds, who manage to somehow restrain themselves rather than drown out the ends of solos with loud reactions. Schmitt offers a flashy interpretation of “Nuages” and proves to be just as accomplished on violin in a romp through “Stompin’ at Decca,” while Debarre’s lively picking in the delightful treatment of “I Can’t Give You Anything but Love” is just as enticing. The final track features electric guitarist Babik Reinhardt (Django’s son) playing a more modern-sounding original with electric violinist Florin Niculescu, pianist Pete Malinverni, bassist Jon Burr, and drummer Leroy Williams, so the flavor of this track is more traditional swing versus gypsy swing. The only shortcoming of the CD is tenor saxophonist James Carter, who appears on several songs and has a tendency to showboat too much at times by alternating between a big sound akin to Coleman Hawkins and needless squealing. Yet even Carter’s occasional detours into dissonance don’t provide that much of a distraction from these swinging live sessions. ~ Ken Dryden
