Natahaniel Mayer -I Just Want To Be Held (2004)

Artist: Nathaniel Mayer
Album: I Just Want To Be Held
Released: 2004
Quality: mp3 CBR 320
Size: 85 MB

”Although this soul shouter had a few hits in the early to mid-‘60s (including the near classic “Village of Love”), it took nearly 40 years for Nathaniel Mayer to release his first album in 2004. While he’s probably lost a few steps along the way, this is an explosive release that sounds as powerful in 2004 as it would have in 1964. With a searing, gritty voice somewhere between James Brown and Mitch Ryder and a terrific band that churns out tough garage R&B, this could have been recorded decades before it was released. That’s a compliment of course, since there just aren’t many contemporary soul discs that attack with this yard dog-styled intensity. Equally impressive is that all but three songs are original, written in the vein of classic Muscle Shoals-era Wilson Pickett without a hint of pretension or sense that Mayer is trying to emulate a long-gone style. There’s a loose, natural swing to the music when the band, complete with snappy Farfisa organ and occasional horns, works a sizzling, unstoppable groove along with the singer. “You Gotta Work,” “From Now On,” “What’s Your Name”—just drop in anywhere and the churning funk-dance rhythms slice like the hardest-edged Southern R&B. A blistering, grinding version of John Lennon’s “I Found Out” might seem like an unusual tune to cover, but it’s one that the Beatle probably would have approved of due to the raw emotion Mayer finds in the lyrics. Just in case you think he’s not as lip-snarling as he used to be, check out the lascivious, self-explanatory “Stick It or Lick It.” Only the gutsy ‘50s ballad “You Are the One” interrupts the pace, but that proves Mayer is just as passionate on the occasional slow dance number as on the unhinged tracks that dominate the disc. At a brisk 35 minutes it’s almost over too quickly, but hopefully listeners won’t have to wait another four decades for its follow-up..”~ Hal Horowitz, allmusic.com

Deep Funk / Jazz / Latin |  mp3,  CBR 320 kbps |  134.2 MB
Label: Freestyle Records |  Release Date: July 11, 2011

Back in September 2007, Freestyle Records released Black Feeling an album project brought to life by Australian musical supremo Lance Ferguson, the man responsible for Freestyle soul-jazz organ trio Cookin On 3 Burners, as well as The Bamboos & Lanu projects on Tru Thoughts Recordings. Each track was presented under a pseudonym to give the impression of an album you would find whilst digging in a Caribbean record shop or American thrift store. As a collection of reworked classics, the album set dance floors alight across the world, indeed, the single Hippy Skippy Moon Strut by The Mighty Show-Stoppers became a huge selling 12 inch, and also notched up well over 350,000 individual viewings on You Tube to date! Now in 2011, Freestyle Records is pleased as punch to be releasing this follow up album.

Hugely entertaining, fun compilation by Barcelona DJ Txarly Brown of rumba-based Spanish pop music from the 1970s, which shows that interesting fusions between anglo-American and Spanish music were already well under way in the last years of the dictatorship and certainly before the ‘nuevo flamenco’ movement. Most of these tracks were unfamiliar to me, and listening to them for the first time was quite bizarre: all the familiar aspects of anglo-american 70s rock and pop are here - psychedelic, disco, soul and funk - but the rumba, flamenco and latin elements always prevail.

The Greg Foat Group - Dark Is The Sun (2011)

Label: Jazzman Records
Genre: Cinematic Jazz / Funk / Revival
Release date: June 7, 2011
Format: mp3, Quality: CBR 320 kbps
Size: 86.3 Mb

Recorded in Sweden, ‘Dark is the Sun’ is a concept album based on themes and variations by British pianist/composer/arranger Greg Foat, who has created an intriguing blend of non-contemporary jazz sounds with classic scoring techniques. An exotic array of unorthodox instrumentation was utilized, including harpsichord, tubular bells and a 15 piece choir. With musical reference and influence from such luminaries as Bruno Nicolai, Michel Legrand and Serge Gainsbourg as well as a firm nod towards UK jazzmen Michael Garrick, Keith Mansfield and Alan Hawkshaw, the result is highly-listenable, enduring and fulfilling for those who like real music played with real instruments.

Review: by Stewart Mason

Absolutely one of the finest funk albums of the early ‘70s, and one of the most unfairly neglected, 1971’s Awakening is as important and exciting as any of Funkadelic’s early albums from the same period. It doesn’t have the mordant humor of George Clinton’s best work, but these seven lengthy tracks are as powerful as early funk gets. A Chicago-based 11-piece ensemble (many members of which would go on to found Earth, Wind & Fire with Maurice White), the Pharaohs were led by their five-man-strong drum section, which included future world jazz pioneer Derf Reklaw and two percussionists specializing in African drumming. This polyrhythmic powerhouse takes center stage on all of the tracks, even the jazzy, ballad-tempo version of Smokey Robinson & the Miracles’ “Tracks of My Tears.” Every track is a winner, from the purely Afro-centric “Ibo” to the soulful groove of “Freedom Road,” but the winner is the 13-and-a-half-minute closer, “Great House,” on which the drums and horn section hurry each other along an expansive, loose-limbed groove while guitarist Yehudah Ben Israel unleashes some acid-style guitar solos similar to what Eddie Hazel was doing on tracks like Funkadelic’s “Wars of Armageddon.” This is as good as Afro-funk gets.

Review: by Steve Huey

Right from the stop-start bass groove that opens “The Emperor,” it’s immediately clear that Ethiopian Knights is more indebted to funk—not just funky jazz, but the straight-up James Brown/Sly Stone variety—than any previous Donald Byrd project. And, like a true funk band, Byrd and his group work the same driving, polyrhythmic grooves over and over, making rhythm the focal point of the music. Although the musicians do improvise, their main objective is to keep the grooves pumping, using their solos more to create texture than harmonic complexity. That’s why jazz purists began to detest Byrd with this album (though the follow-ups certainly cinched it); in truth, even though Ethiopian Knights did move Byrd closer to R&B, it’s still more jazz than funk, and didn’t completely foreshadow his crossover. The dense arrangements and lo-o-o-ng workouts (two of the three tracks are over 15 minutes) are indicative of Byrd’s continued debt to Miles Davis, in particular the bevy of live double LPs Davis issued in the early ‘70s. Byrd again leads a large ensemble, but with mostly different players than on his recent sessions; some come from the group assembled for Bobby Hutcherson’s Head On album, others from the Jazz Crusaders. That’s part of the reason there are fewer traces of hard bop here, but it’s also clear from the title that Byrd’s emerging Afrocentric consciousness was leading him—like Davis—to seek ways of renewing jazz’s connection to the people who created it. Even if it isn’t quite as consistent as Kofi and Electric Byrd, Ethiopian Knights is another intriguing transitional effort that deepens the portrait of Byrd the acid jazz legend.
