Among American audiences, Manu Dibango is best known for “Soul Makossa,” a highly infectious blend of African music, soul-funk, and jazz that became a major pop hit in the early ‘70s. The African artist revisited his signature tune on 1994’s Wakafrika, which boasts an all-star cast that includes Peter Gabriel as well as Haiti’s Papa Wemba and African heroes Ladysmith Black Mambazo, King Sunny Ade, and Youssou N’Dour. With such a stellar bunch of guests, Wakafrika should have been outstanding instead of simply decent. But while it isn’t the all-out masterpiece it should have been, there’s a lot that’s enjoyable on this CD, including the reggae-influenced “Em’ma,” a remake of Gabriel’s “Biko,” and the “Makossa”-ish jams “Wakafrika” and “Jingo.” Though likable enough, Dibango’s new version of “Soul Makossa” falls short of the excellence of the original—but then, one couldn’t realistically expect him to improve on perfection. I heard this guy’s music for the first time from a battered tape recorder in my favourite greek restaurant. Upon asking who he was, the waiter only shrugged his shoulders, whispered “Lemonopoulos” looked up to the sky,  and went away. He didn’t know anything about this legendary bouzouki player and there isn’t much news about him on the net either. He was greek of course, but lived in the United States, pursuing his career only on and off. His biggest aim for fame was when he wrote the music for a Broadway show staring Melina Mercouri, but that one didn’t exactly leave a dent in musical history.
Sorry for the bad quality, no news about the label or anything else, except you can read greek and have a look at the back of the cover…

And another great album of Haris Lemonopoulos… Listening to him I seem to detect far other influences than “just” greek traditional music - no wonder with his american background! Could it be he also studied his fair share of guitar master’s music?
Get a plate of mezé starters, followed by some mediterranean mixed barbeque accompanied by a bottle of heavy greek wine, put the music on… and then forget about the food!
Sorry again about the poor quality, it’s getting worse!!!
