In the liner notes to Six String Evolution, Oberg states that the date features songs that fit his style - My opinion, of his style? He burns tastefully with a Bebop-singe over many genres. The material is diverse, featuring archtop, electric fusion and nylon string guitar-work on a variety of jazz and pop tunes. One of the many great things about the CD is that, even with the changes in instrumentation and style, there is a continuity of thought and vibe that make it easy to listen from beginning to end. Sadly, Oberg’s chops make me contemplate using my L-5 for firewood…He’s soooo good!

Andreas Oberg’s “Six String Evolution” CD features a host of fine players including Oberg on electric and acoustic guitars plus vocals on “Papa Gato” (penned by L.A.‘s own Poncho Sanchez). Le premier album de ce groupe toulousain “Expression” après deux ans de travail, est un aboutissement. Il a les couleurs d’un voyage imaginaire qui nous entraînerait en Europe du Sud et des Balkans avec dix compositions originales volontairement métissées : le swing manouche a la part belle entre les deux guitaristes et le batteur du Mystere Trio, qui ont la formidable puissance d’entraînement des trios gitans. Les compositions sont d’ailleurs le fait de ces copains guitaristes : celui qui compose, en général, propose le thème, et le second l’accompagne. Le batteur n’est pas en reste : le troisième côté de ce triangle très équilatéral assure pour une grande part une solide assise à ces compositions et crée des arrangements astucieux.

Mais si les compositions de style manouche (Marguerite le premier titre et le final très enlevé Vent d’Est) chantent immédiatement aux oreilles du public, même le moins averti, l’inspiration du Mystere Trio vient aussi du bebop, du latin jazz “Samba-C” et du jazzrock comme aux beaux jours du trio de Paco di Lucia, John McLaughlin et Al di Meola (la composition flamenco Mi Nieta)

Avec “Sacrée Crevette” les accents des folklores de l’est s’imposent ; une citation explicite au Blue Rondo de Dave Brubeck dans Marion-B n’enlève rien à l’univers plus personnel de Mystique.

Les musiciens de ce trio nous font partager leur vision très ouverte du jazz, cette musique qui n’est pas toujours aussi intellectuelle qu’on le pense et qu’ils aimeraient faire découvrir au plus grand nombre par le biais de cet album très cohérent :
“Nous n’avons pas voulu nous attacher à une direction musicale précise mais plutôt à une unité de sons acoustiques qui donnent un aspect attachant et authentique à cet album. “

Le pari est tenu avec le groupe toulousain qui ne fait pas mystère de son attirance pour une musique vivante, enjouée et libre. Simplement vivante et toujours actuelle. Mais c’est déjà beaucoup

With the exception of one number (“House That Love Built”) from 1978 that matches drummer Elvin Jones with the reeds of Frank Foster and Pat LaBarbera, guitarist Roland Prince and bassist Andy McCloud, this CD reissue focuses on an unusual and generally successful reunion session. Drummer Jones and pianist McCoy Tyner have not recorded together that often since leaving John Coltrane’s Quartet in late 1965. With Pharoah Sanders (who was part of the reason they departed) on tenor, bassist Richard Davis in the late Jimmy Garrison’s spot, and guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly an added wild card, the musicians avoid Coltrane tunes in favor of newer originals and the standard “Sweet and Lovely.” Sanders sounds very much like late-1950s Coltrane; Bourelly is a bit out of place, and Tyner easily takes solo honors. An interesting but not overly memorable outing that was originally cut for the Japanese Trio label and made available in the U.S. by the now-defunct Black-Hawk company. ~Scott Yanow, allmusic.com
