“US R&B singer, sometimes refered to as “The Queen of Chicago Blues”. Born september 28, 1928, Bartlett, Tennessee. Dubbed “Koko” due to her love of chocolate. Discovered by Willie Dixon in 1962 leading to a contract with Chess. In close collaboration with Dixon she released several singles, including the 1965 “Wang Dang Doodle” previously recorded by Howlin’ Wolf. Not coincidental. Taylor’ had the most powerful vocal of the contemporary female Chess staplemates including Etta James, Mitty Collier and Irma Thomas and her shouting style had more in common with e.g. Big Mama Thornton and Howlin’ Wolf. Her 1969 selftitled debut album is mostly a compilation of her Chess singles. From 1975 and for more than 30 years she recorded for Alligator Records. Her 1985 album “Queen of the blues” won her a Grammy Award for Best Traditional Blues Album that year. Little Miss Higgins- Live: Two Nights In March is the first “live” album from lead guitar player, singer and songwriter Little Miss Higgins.  The album captures the vibrant energy of Little Miss Higgins’ live performance.  Her partner in crime and guitar player, Foy Taylor, performs on both nights, including singing harmonies on a previously unreleased song, “Snowin’ Today: A Lament for Louis Riel”.
The first night in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, and the first seven songs on the album, includes guest players Joey Lorer on bass and “Jimmie” James McKee on trumpet.  It was a rowdy night at Amigo’s Cantina, one of Little Miss’ favourite places to play.
The Engineered Air Theatre in Calgary, Alberta set the stage for the second night to a sold out audience.  Cedric Blary, of the High Water Jug Band, joined Little Miss and Foy to round out that old-time sound.  They even performed the Memphis Minnie song, “Killer Diller”, impromptu and unrehearsed, which turned out to be a crowd favourite.
This album, comprised of songs from LMH’s first two releases (Junction City 2007 & Cobbler Shop Sessions 2005), also includes ‘live-takes‘ of two brand new songs. Although it’s a popular notion that America’s fascination with all things sexual burst into the open during the Sexual Revolution of the 1960s, this ribald collection of sex songs drawn mostly from the 1920s and 1930s shows that things were bubbling along well before that. Sung here by female blues and jazz singers, these suggestive songs use various food metaphors to talk about sex, and give credence to the possibility that food and sex have been linked together in the American mindset for a good long time. All manner of condiments, hot dogs, peanuts, and jelly rolls parade through these tracks until one feels like driving straight to the nearest convenience store for some late-night snacks, which, come to think of it, Americans do all the time. Bessie Smith even manages to get sugar, hot dogs, and jelly rolls all into one line in the opener and title tune here, “I Need a Little Sugar in My Bowl,” while Lil Johnson goes so far as to name names in “Sam the Hot Dog Man.” There are some surprises, too, like gospel guitarist and singer Sister Rosetta Tharpe doing a pair of decidedly secular tunes, “I Want a Tall Skinny Papa” and “Rock Me,” which features some pretty cool guitar, by the way. The most startling track is the final one, Lucille Bogan’s “Shave ‘Em Dry” from 1935, which dispenses with metaphor altogether and talks about sex with a stunning directness, even using the F-word with a precise exactness that contemporary rappers often seem unable to grasp, for all their use of the word and its derivations. Bogan’s recording has horrible sound, but it somehow all adds to the stark, unforgiving honesty of it, and “Shave ‘Em Dry” gives off an unbelievable intensity.
