“Simply a must for anyone who wants to hear as much great guitar as possible. Please consider this also a Breau review in general: Lenny was able to, with his monstrous fingerpicking and incomparable harmonics technique, effect the guitar’‘s evolution in much the same way as Stanley Jordan’‘s tapping did many years later. The differences are important: Breau’‘s dynamics, tone quality, and rythmic vitality are -so much better- than tapping’‘s tinny music-box tendencies (and although it doesn’‘t have any thing to do with the technical differences, Lenny never sold out). No one yet has even -attempted- to be a Breau imitator (or at least not come close enough to be recognized as one), in spite of all of the extra strings guys seem to be putting on their guitars lately, Lenny ended up using a -high- A over E, but did much recording on the usual six.”—fighthepower (Chicago, IL)

Lenny Breau is a jazz enigma. He never really caught on with the public, yet was recognized by his peers as a major guitar innovator. Add to this a mysterious and still unsolved death in a Los Angeles swimming pool at the too-young age of 43. This is the way a cult figure is born. Former student Randy Bachman has been meticulously and methodically issuing Breau material through his Guitarchives label. This one is a 1977 live session at a Nashville, TN, club where Breau teams up with Richard Cotten, with whom he played frequently when visiting the capital of country music. Country music and Nashville notwithstanding, the album play list is a mix of classic and jazz standards. One of the classic standards is a moving, flowing, highly lyrical “Stella By Starlight.” “On Green Dolphin Street” has Breau starting off quiet and unassuming before he leaps off into a series of scintillating improvisational runs, during which you never hear anything played the same way twice. He pays tribute to one of his influences, Bill Evans, with the Evans pieces “The Two Lonely People” and “La Funkallero.” Breau made no bones about it that his unique single-string voicings were due in no little part to his transformation of Evans’ piano technique to the guitar. Cotten is a fine guitarist, although here he pretty much plays rhythm to Breau’s melody. One of the more engaging moments comes with the coda, where for almost seven minutes Cotten’s daughter Darci Cotten shares personal recollections, peeling away some more of the mystery surrounding this fine guitar innovator. Indications are that this CD is the first of Breau’s Nashville performances that Bachman intends to get to market. One hopes that this is more than a rumor. Recommended. ~ Dave Nathan

Pat Metheny’s WATERCOLORS is sonically a much simpler record than many of his regular group’s albums, but it’s nonetheless a musically engaging venture that once again challenges the parameters of modern jazz. With his longtime partner keyboardist Lyle Mays, European bassist Eberhard Weber, and drummer Danny Gottlieb, Metheny leads the listener through a galaxy of ethereal moods, dancing rhythms, and soaring melodies. Add to this the underlying theme of water, and Metheny has all the ingredients for a musical masterpiece. As expected, the music has the European New Age quality that is imbued on most ECM discs, but Metheny’s knack for creating pastoral colors forged with rich musical foundations is as strong as ever. Whether it’s on dancing quartet pieces like the opening title track and the delightfully melodic “Lakes” or programmatic swathes of expression like the solo piece “Icefire,” Metheny displays his signature flowing style that defines him as one of the guitar world’s most gifted artists. Mays, Weber, and Gottlieb form a musical union that ebbs and flows gracefully, tastefully supporting the leader’s cascading lines. Other noteworthy tracks are the mid-tempo groove piece “River Quay,” a boundary-stretching improvisational suite, and the epic mood piece “Sea Song.“Recorded at Talent Studios, Oslo, Norway in February 1977.Personnel: Pat Metheny (guitar, 12-string guitar, 15-string harpguitar); Lyle Mays (piano); Eberhard Weber (bass); Dan Gottlieb (drums).
Pat Metheny emerges on his second album, Watercolors, as an ECM impressionist, generally conforming to the label’s overall sound while still asserting his own personality. As the title suggests, there are several mood pieces here that are suspended in the air without rhythmic underpinning, a harbinger for the new age invasion still in the future. Metheny’s softly focused, asymmetrical guitar style, with echoes of apparent influences as disparate as Jim Hall, George Benson, Jerry Garcia, and various country guitarists, is quite distinctive even at this early juncture. Metheny’s long-running partnership with keyboardist Lyle Mays also begins here, with Mays mostly on acoustic piano but also providing a few mild synthesizer washes. Danny Gottlieb is on drums, and ECM regular Eberhard Weber handles the bass. This is essentially the first album by the Pat Metheny Group per se, although the band had yet to find its direction in this somewhat diffuse showing. ~ Richard S. Ginell, All Music Guide.
this album shows a completely different style of jazz guitar, as played by Ralph Towner on 12-string classical guitar. I really like this side of his work, and I’ll be looking for more to share soon. Gary Burton is, as always, superb.

Ralph Towner & Gary Burton - Slide Show

Review by Scott Yanow
11 years after recording Matchbook, guitarist Ralph Towner and vibraphonist Gary Burton (who doubles here on marimba) had a recorded reunion for another duet album. Both of the musicians display unchanged and highly complementary styles on eight of Towner’s originals and “Blue In Green.” The music is quite subtle, and the blend between the vibes and the guitar is satisfying, both for close listening and as background music.

Real name: Lee Mack [Captain Fingers] Ritenour.Born: Jan 11, 1952 in Hollywood, CA.Genres: Jazz.Styles: Crossover Jazz, Jazz-Pop.Instruments: GuitarLee Ritenour has long been the perfect studio musician, one who can melt into the background without making any impact. While he possesses impresive technique, Ritenour has mostly played instrumental pop throughout his career, sometimes with a Brazilian flavor. His few jazz efforts have found him essentially imitating Wes Montgomery, but despite that he has been consistently popular since the mid-‘70s. After touring with Sergio Mendes’ Brasil ‘77 in 1973, Ritenour became a very busy studio guitarist in Los Angeles, taking time off for occasional tours with his groups and in the mid-‘90s with Bob James in Fourplay. He also recorded many albums as a leader
